Abstract
594,255. Magnetic separators. ELECTROMAGNETS, Ltd., BOX, W. E., and CLARIDGE, J. T. May 30, 1945, No. 13536. [Class 72] In magnetic separators for dealing with liquids of the kind in which the liquid is caused to flow or percolate over an aggregation or collection of individual magnetisable elements such, e.g. as described in Specification 557,626 a valve means is associated with the liquid outlet and is caused to move into a closing position whenever the section containing the magnetisable elements is lifted preparatory to removal for a cleansing operation and which is caused to open automatically as the section is lowered into its initial position on replacement. The permanent magnet 7 preferably made of the material known under the name " Alnico " is in the form of a casing having a central opening in the flange 7a and is secured on the top of a circular base section 5 having a central depression 5c which is provided with a plurality of radially arranged apertures 5d in its base. Adjustably mounted in the depression 5c is a pin 6 having a screwed-on tappet head 6a. Adapted to rest on the top of the magnet 7 is a removable section 8 having upper and lower parts 8a, 8b of aluminium, the section being supported on the magnet 7 by a shoulder 8c. The depending annular portion 8d of the part 8b fits within the central hole in the part 7a and bolted to an inward flange 8f on the part 8b is a guide plate 10 having radially arranged slots 10a therein and also a central aperture in which slides a rod 11 provided at the top with a handle 11a, intermediately with a plate 12 having outlets 12b and a series of slots 12c adapted to co-operate with projections 8g in the part 8b and the bottom with a valve 13 which co-operates with a seating 8b formed on the part 8d. The space between plates 10 and 12 is filled with a plurality of steel balls 15. When the separator is operating the projecting end of the rod 11 is supported by the part 6a on the rod 6 and the valve 13 is open so that the liquid to be treated can pass through the spaces between the balls 15 and out through the openings 12b, the part 8d and the apertures 5d. When it is desired to clean the balls 15 of adhering material the section 8 is lifted from the base 5, the valve 13 immediately dropping and closing the opening 8d. To lift the valve 13 during the cleansing operation, the handle 11a is pulled upwardly to raise the plate 12 clear of the projections 8g and then turned so that the slots 12c are not in register with the projections 8g so that in releasing the handle the plate will rest on these projections and maintain the valve 13 in the lifted position. Mild steel pressings or masses of metallic wool may be used instead of the balls 15.
