In Mexico n 14, lm a .4 Claims. (cuss-aw) This invention relates to an improved gas and oil separator and more particularly to a separator which is adapted to be connected directly to a well casing.
An object of this invention is to provide an improved separating device which may be connected to a well casing and which will reduce the normal pressure of the gas or oil as it is dis,- charged from the well casing in addition to separating the liquids from the vapors. j
Another object of this invention is to provide an improved check valve in combination with a perforated partition in a separator which is operated by means of a float so as to control the passage of liquids and gases through the refining system which is adapted to be connected to this separator.
A further object of this invention is to provide an improved check valve which is operated by gravity to open the valve and which is operated by means of a float in order to close the valve.
Embodying the objects aforesaid and others which may hereinafter appear, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be more specifica ly referred to and illustrated in the accompanying drawing wherein an embodiment of the invention is shown, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications may be resorted to which fall within the scope of the invention as claimed.

Referring to the drawing, the numeral ll designates generally an upstanding hollow structure or separating tower comprising a cylindrical body II, a top wall i3 and a wall l2. The latter is positioned within and arranged upwardly from the lower end of the body H. The top wall I 3 is provided with a marginal flange l4 extending over the upper end of the cylindrcal body II and this flange may be secured to the body H by welding, rivets or other fastening means. The bottom wall I! is -of concave construction and is preferably welded, riveted or otherwise fastened portion of the body II.

A fluid intake pipe II is extended axially through the top wall It and one end of the pipe II is adapted to be connected to a suitable source 5 of fluid supply similar to the separator tank membet in my co-pending application, Serial No. 239,890, flied Nov. 10, 1938, for a Refining process. The pipe II is extended vertically through the receptacle or body II to a tical center thereof and is extended through a perforated partition plate I having a plurality of holes I! therethrough. The pipe II is sealed in the top wall I! by means of nuts II and I! and also suitable gaskets 2| and 2|. The lower 15 end of the pipe II is open and discharges into a receiving chamber 22 for a body of gas and oil and such chamber is positioned in the lower The perforated partition chamber 22 aforesaid and an upper separated gas or vapor receiving or collecting chamber 22. The perforated plate I. has the peripheral edges thereof secured as by welding or the, like to the inner surface of the body I l and the outer portion 95 of the plate it which surrounds the perforated portion of the plate It is imperforate as at 24. The imperforate portion 24 is provided on the under side thereof with a depending valve seat providedin the form of a V-shaped annular rib. An axially apertured disc-like valve 26 haying a gasket 21 on the upper side thereof is adapted to engage the valve seat or rib 25. The valve 26 is provided with a flanged marginal portion 22 which acts movement.
- The perforated portion of the plate It provides an intake for the upper chamber 23 for the separated gases or vapors which pass upwardly from on of the body of the chamber 22. The valve 24 is for the purpose of controlling such intake.

An annular float member 34 is secured to a U-shaped supporting member 35 which is also secured to the bushing 32. from the bushing 32 and is adapted to rest on a plate 36 which is secured about the pipe I! by means of a nut 81. The nut 31 may be adjusted vertically along the pipe I so as to regulate the opening of the valve 28. v
The tower II is provided in the lower portion thereof with a sediment outlet pipe 38 which is secured to the central point -of the bottom wall l2, and is extended through the wall of the cylindrical member II and connected to a suitable receptacle similar to that disclosed in my aforesaid application on a refining process filed of even date herewith. The pipe 38 is firmly securedto the tower It by, means of nuts 39 and 4. engaging on opposite sides of the cylindrical wall II. A heavy liquid outlet pipe 4| provided with a depending portion 42 within the tank I l is extended through the wall of the tank ll adjacent the' lower portion thereof and secured by means of nuts 43 and 44. The pipe 4| may be connected to a suitable heavy component receptacle similar to that shown in my aforesaid application on a refining process. The vapors or gases which rise in the vapor chamber 23 are drawn off therefrom by means of a pipe 45 which is secured to the tower ill by means of nuts 4i and 41. The pipe 45 is adapted to be connected to a condensing tower similar to that disclosed in my aforesaid application on condensing towers filed of even date herewith.
In the use of this separator, the incoming fluid will pass downwardly through the pipe l and be first discharged to the lower or liquid chamber 22. Normally, the valve 26 will be in open position by reasonof the weight of the valve 26 and the component parts thereof so that-the gases or vapors may rise upwardly through the perforated plate l6 and pass out through the outlet 46. In the event the fluid in the'chamber 22 rises too high, the float 34 will move the valve 20 to a closed position.
The heavier oil or liquids in the liquid chamber 22 are drawn off through either or both pipe connections 38 and 4|. Where there is not a great deal of sediment in the fluid, the pipe 38 may be used with the pipe 4| to remove the liquids from the liquid chamber 22. However,
where a considerable amount of sediment is in the fluid, the pipe 38 may be connected to a suitable refuse receptacle and the oil removed through the pipe 4|. It will, of course, be understood that the hereinbefore described separator may be either connected directly to a well casing, particularly a gas well casing or may be connected to an oil casing or a stock tank from which the oil is pumped and discharged into the separator I!) through the pipe l5.
What I claim is:
1. In a gas and oil separator, an upstanding hollow structure formed of a cylindrical body, a top wall and a bottom wall, a partition within and secured to the inner face of said body and dividing said structure into an upper chamber for receiving separated gas and a lower chamber for receiving combined gas and oil, said partition having a perforated portionconstituting an intake to the upper chamber for the separated gas and an imperforated portion surrounding said perforated portion, an annular valve seat depeding from said imperforated portion and bordering said perforated portion, a combined gas The float 34 extends downwardly spaced relation with respect to said seat, a takeand oil delivering pipe suspended from said top wall, extending through said upper chamber, disposed axially of said perforated portion, depending from said partition and discharging into .the upper part of said lower chamber, a float 5 operated controlling valve structure for said perforated portion for coaction with said valve seat mounted about, slidably connected to and suspended by said pipe below. and in normal ofl pipe for said separated gas receiving chamber, and a pair of take-ofi elements for and communicating with said lower chamber, one being arranged above and the other below said bottom wall.
2. In a gas and oil separator, an upstanding hollow structure formed of a cylindrical body, a top wall and a bottom wall, a partition within and secured to the inner face of said body and dividing said structure into an upper chamber for receiving separated gas and a lower chamber for receiving combined gas and oil, said partition having a perforated portion constituting an intake to the upper chamber for the separated gas and an imperforated portion surrounding said perforated portion, an annular valve seat depending from said imperforated portion and bordering said perforated portion, a combined gas and oil delivering pipe suspended from said top wall, extending through said upper chamber, disposed axially of said perforated portion, depending from said partition and discharging into the upper part of said lower chamber, a float operated controlling valve structure for said perporated portion for coaction with said valve seat mounted about, slidably connected to and suspended by said pipe below and in normal spaced relation with respect to said seat, a take-off pipe for said separated gas receiving chamber, a pair of take-ofi elements for and communicating with said lower chamber, one being arranged above and the other below said bottom wall, that element arranged above said bottom wall being connected to and extended from said body and having its intake disposed in proximity to the upper face of said bottom wall, and the other of elements being connected to said bottom wall and said body, extended from the latter and having its intake at the upper face of said bottom wall.
3. In a gas and oil separator an upstanding cylindrical body, top and bottom walls carried by said body, a partition secured to the inner face of the body and dividing the body into an upper chamber for receiving gas and a lower chamber for receiving combined gas and 011, said partition having a perforated portion constituting an intake to the upper chamber, and an imperforated portion surrounding said perforated portion, an annular valve seat about said perforated portion and depending from said partition, a combined gas and oil delivery pipe extending axially through said top wall and terminating below said partition, opposed keys carried. by said pipe below said partition, a disc-shaped valve member loose on said pipe and formed with opposed keyways to receive said keys, an upstanding flange carried by said valve member, a disc-shaped gasket seated on said valve member within said flange, a bushing fixed to said valve member and slidingly engaging said pipe, a float about said pipe, a U-shaped support carried by said bushing and fixed to said float, and an annular float limiting plate adjustably carried by said pipe.
4. In a gas and oil separator an upstanding 7 cylindrical body, top and bottom walls carried by said body, a partition secured to the inner face of the body and dividing the body into an upper chamber for receiving gas and a lower chamber for receiving combined gas and oil, said partition having a perforated portion constituting an intake to the upper chamber, and an imperiorated portion surrounding said perforated portion, an annular valve seat about said periorated portion and depending from said partition, a combined gas and oil delivery pipe extending axially through said top wall and terminating below said partition, opposed keys carried by said pipe below said partition, a disc-shaped valve member loose on said pipe and formed with opposed keyways to receive said keys, an up- 3 standingflange carried by said valve member, a disc-shaped gasket seated on said valve mem-- ber within said flange. a bushing fixed to said valve member and slidingly engaging said pipe, a float about said pipe, 0.
