Abstract

593,261. Making bearings. HAY. WARD, TYLER, & CO., Ltd., HOWARD, G. P. E., and IVANOFF, V. May 28, 1945, No. 13305. [Class 83 (ii)] [Also in Group XXXIV] A tilting pad 1 for an end thrust bearing has its side opposite the bearing surface 3 out away or stepped to provide the tilting edge 4. The stepping is not carried completely across the pad, so that the pad can be rested firmly on this side during production, and, if of magnetic material, held there by magnetic attraction. If magnetic attraction is not used, undercut side recesses 8 are provided to be engaged by the heads of screws. The supporting ring 2 is made considerably narrower (radially) than the pads, and the stepping is carried across the middle of the pad no further than is necessary to traverse this ring. A channel-shaped recess 5 is thus formed. In a modification, the pad is formed at each end with a lug 6 of reduced depth, having a notch 7 in it for locating screws, so that the bearing surfaces 3 will be proud of the screw-heads. A common screw, fitted loosely to allow for tilting, engages in the notches of two adjacent lugs. When lugs are used, the stepping may be carried right across the pads.
