[Class 112] [Also in Group XXV] A sewing-machine shuttle having means for adjusting the thread tension-is provided with a device for indicating visually the tension applied, comprising a graduated member connected with, or forming part of, the adjusting means. In the arrangement shown, applied to a vertical axis rotary shuttle, the tension is applied to the thread through a lever 33, pivoted at 44, by means of a cam 48 against which the end of the lever bears, the cam having marks to indicate its position of adjustment. The bobbin 14 is carried within a flange 21 of a stationary ring 22, and the thread passes out through an inclined notch in the flange 21, beneath a plate 24 shaped to fit against the flange, between two fingers at the end of the plate 24 and then across the top of the bobbin. The ends of the plate 24 are bent to locate it in apertures in the flange 21, and pressure is applied to it by the end of the lever 33 opposite to the cam 48 through the intermediary of a spring 31, held at one end in one of the apertures in the flange 21; the lever 33 has a lug 38 extending through the spring 31 and pressure plate 24 into -a slot in the flange 21 to locate all the parts, and its extreme end is bent down into a notch in the ring 22 to avoid catching the needle thread. The pivot pin 44 of the lever 33 is carried eccentrically on a plug 41 rotatably mounted in a ring beneath the ring 22 and provided with a spring-wire catch engaging notches in the mounting hole to hold it in adjusted position. The cam 48 is carried 'by a headed pin inserted in a key-hole slot 53 in the ring 22; it has a screwdriver slot for adjustment, and its periphery may be notched to receive the end of the lever 33 so as to be held in adjusted position. The cam may be replaced by a screw or other movable member, and may bear directly on the spring, which may bear directly on the thread, though the large bearing surface of the member 24 minimises variation of tension due to wear. The indicating drive may be carried by any member of the tension-adjusting means,- and may include a pointer.
