Abstract

593,133. Portable buildings. TENNESSEE COAL, IRON, & RAILROAD CO. March 1, 1944, No. 3864. Convention date, May 3, 1943. [Classes 20(i), 20(ii) and 20(iv)] Relates to prefabricated house constructions comprising a metal floor-supporting sub - structure, flanged metal uprights secured to the said sub-structure for supporting the walls, inclined flanged roofsupporting members secured to the uprights, a number of sheet metal panels of uniform width secured to the uprights to form the walls, and similar panels secured to the inclined members to form the roof. According to the invention, the wall and roof panels are flanged longitudinally, the flanges being secured to those of the upright and inclined supporting members, and each set of co-operating flanges is overlapped by a U-shaped batten secured to the flanges. Foundation and floor. - The house is built on a foundation of steel posts 10 (some of which are shown in Figs. 6 and 7, which are sections on 6-6, 7-7 of the floor plan, Fig. 4) formed of angle-members arranged back to back and set on feet. Corner posts, cross-shaped in section, are formed of angle-members connected together. Z-shaped sills 14, 16 extend along each side and end of the building, the horizontal top flanges of the sills overlapping the outer rows of posts. Transverse floor joists 18, which may each consist of two members arranged end to end, are supported at their outer ends on the lower flanges of the longitudinal sills 14, and, when end-to-end members are used, the inner ends of these are bolted to some of the posts 10. The joists, which are of H-section, are built up of Z-shaped parts and angle - members. Longitudinally extending floor - supporting " purlins " 22, which may also comprise parts laid end to end, are fixed to angle-members secured to the transverse Z-sills, and to the joists 18. Connection to the latter is made by screws 24 (which may be wedged between component parts of the joists), and, at the places where the ends of purlins abut over the joists, by splicing members. At these places, short "purlin-fillers" 22f are placed between the purlins, parallel to the joists. Ply-wood panels, forming the flooring, are attached to the longitudinal sills 14, to the purlins 22, and to the members 22f. To the top flanges of the sills 14, 16 and extending along their whole length are bolted angle-members 30, 32 having downwardly turned ends to deflect water. Walls.-Fixed by bolts to the vertical parts of the members 30, 32 are wallsupporting uprights 34, Figs. 5 and 14, each of which is formed of angle-members arranged back to back. As shown in Fig. 5 (an horizontal section showing the wall construction), the corner uprights are cross-shaped, and the others of T-shaped section. A longitudinally extending eaves member 38, Fig. 14, is secured to the top ends of the uprights at each side of the building. The walls are formed of flanged sheet-metal panels 40, Fig. 5, the flanges of which are bolted to the outwardlyextending flanges of the members 34. U- shaped strips 42 overlap the adjoining flanges as shown, being secured by the bolts to make weather-tight joints. The panels are spaced away from the inner flanges of the uprights 34, to allow of the insertion of wall-boarding 46, which may carry a heat-insulating layer 48. An eaves flashing 82, Fig. 14, secured to the uprights 34 and to the vertical leg of the eaves member 38 covers the top ends of the wall panels, etc. Roof.-The roof comprises a number of rafters, 49, Fig. 14, each consisting of angle-members arranged back to back, the lower ends of the rafters resting on an inclined flange 38a of the eaves member, and the upper ends being supported by ridge members 56. These are secured to upright struts 58, fastened to gusset plates 60 carried by cross members 62 of roof trusses. The trusses, of which there is any suitable number spaced along the length of the building, are connected to the eaves member 38, and embody other constructional features as shown. Flanged roof panels 50, which are of the same pattern as the wall panels 40, are interposed between adjacent rafters and are secured thereto, with overlapping batten strips 52, in the same way as in the wall construction. Layers of insulating material are similarly provided below the roof panels. Separators 64 are interposed between the flanges of the ridge members 56, which are spaced apart to provide for the passage of a smoke or vent pipe. A ridge plate 74, held in place by hooked fastenings (not shown) covers the space between the ridge members 56 except where passage for a pipe is required. The walls can be adapted to receive windows and doors of stock sizes. The construction and fitting of windows and doors, which are the subject-matter of Specifications 593,131 and 593,132 respectively, are described and shown.
