Abstract
592,418. Drying and conditioning grain &c. CARR, J. B., and HANDLEY, C. G. Oct. 11, 1944, Nos. 19542/44 and 16548/45. [Class 34 (ii)] Apparatus for drying or conditioning grain &c. of the kind comprising, for example, a column having an upper sweating, intermediate drying, and lower cooling parts in which hot or cold air is directed transversely across a vertical grain passage extending the length of the column, the column is constituted by a number of superposed sections A of substantially identical form. As shown in Fig. 2, each section A comprises an outer sheet metal shell B, having four main walls b<1> ... b<4> joined by short corner walls b, and a square inner shell C, having main walls c' ... c' and extension walls F at two opposite corners. The inner shell encloses a space J for the passage of grain, and the space between the, two shells, divided by the walls F into two L-shaped parts d, d' and d<1>, d<2>, serves for the inlet and outlet of air to and from the space J. Each section also includes two rows g, g<1> of inverted troughs which may have louvered sides and are removably supported on sheet metal brackets g<2>, g' extending inwardly from the walls c<1>, c', the wall c' being provided with apertures opposite the ends of the lower troughs g and the wall c' with apertures opposite the ends of the upper troughs g' so that air may flow from the inlet b into the troughs g<1>, out of the open bottoms thereof, through the space J, into the troughs g from underneath, and thence to the outlet b<2>. The several sections are assembled with a packing plate K, Fig. 4, between each two, said plate having an opening to coincide with the space J and apertures k, k<1> coinciding with the spaces d, d<2> in the lower section, and preferably successive sections are disposed at an anti-clockwise angle of 90 degrees to the section below so that the space d of any section is in communication' with the space d' of the section above it and a spiral air inlet passage is formed, the spaces d', d<2> similarly forming a spiral exhaust passage. Air inlet and outlet openings M, N are located in the walls b<4>, b<2> respectively of any one or more of the sections, also cleaning doors P at the junctions of the spaces d, d<3> and d<1>, d<2>. Specification 582,012 is referred to in the first Provisional Specification.
