Abstract

3-Picoline, 4-picoline, and 2.6 lutidine are recovered from mixtures containing them but free from water, e.g., coal tar fractions boiling about 140-145 DEG C. by adding phenol to the mixture and distilling off azeotropes of these compounds with the phenol from which the compounds themselves may be recovered. A commercial mixture of 500 parts coal tar containing 30 per cent. 2.6 lutidine, 35 per cent. 3-picoline and 35 per cent. 4-picoline was mixed with 1200 part commercial phenol and the mixture distilled in a still with a column equivalent to 20 or more theoretical plates. After separation of a forerun of 1 per cent. maximum boiling azeotropes of 2.6 lutidine, 3-picoline and 4-picoline were collected in that order at temperatures in the range 186-191 DEG C. The middle fraction was redistilled and a middle 80 per cent. fraction collected, treated with sodium hydroxide and the 3-picoline distilled off; the other fractions were treated similarly.
