Abstract
591,559. Hand-guided cutting- appliances. BRITISH THOMSONHOUSTON CO., Ltd., and WOODFIELD, T. H. May 10, 1945, No. 11727. (Class 31 (ii)] [Also in Group VI] In a cutting-appliance, particulary for plaster bandages, of the kind incorporating a reciprocatory cutter co-operating with an anvil body to sever material placed therebetween, the cutter consists of a pair of laterally spacedapart cutting edges so formed that there is a clear channel open at opposite ends in the direction of the cutting line of the appliance, and the anvil body presents towards the said cutter a pair of laterally spaced-apart cutting edges whereof each is arranged to co-operate with a corresponding one of the movable cutting edges, the fixed cutting edges each having an elevation which gradually rises with respect to the supporting surface of the shoe of the anvil body, which elevations are at a minimum near the leading post of the shoe. In Fig. 4, a motor-driven shaft 21 extends through a handle body 23 and acts through an eccentric mechanism 22 to impart to cutter 20 a reciprocatory motion along axis B-B disposed at an angle of less than 90 degrees to the supporting surface 35 of the anvil. A divided housing 24 encloses mechanism 22 and provides upper and lower bearings 25, 26, for the cutter driving member 27. A detachable bracket 32 accommodates the stem 33 of the anvil body 34, which may be adjusted longitudinally to allow for different thicknesses of bandage by operation of a nut 37 with the threaded extension 38 of stem 33, the latter being prevented from turning by a key 39. In an alternative construction, Fig. 2, the anvil body 11 is connected by means of a bracket 10 to a casing 3 which is branched from a main casing enclosing an electric motor, driving an eccentric mechanism, and also the shaft of the cutter unit comprising a plate 5 to each side of which is connected a cutter blade 8. The anvil body 11 is shaped to provide a shoe 13 and a medially extending rib 14, the upper edges of which provide cutter edges cooperating with blades 8. The upper surface of the rib may be grooved medially and provides a supporting surface for severed strip of material 17. The cutters 8 may be spaced for cutting a strip about # inch wide and the stroke of reciprocation may be about 1/16th inch.
