Abstract

591,129. Incendiary bombs. BISHOP, F. C. N., CRAWFORD, C., DICK, J. S., and TURNER, G. F. B. Nov. 22, 1935, No. 32390. [Class 9-(i)] An incendiary bomb comprises a streamline body a formed of inflammable material such as wood pulp or celluloid and a plurality of incendiary units c forming a rigid column between the nose d and tail e of the bomb. The units are enclosed in a paper wrapping b<2> within a steel tube b and are ejected in succession from the bomb. The tube is surrounded by a layer b<1> of inflammable material such as pitch or resin. The nose d is of hollow steel and has a filling d<1> of incendiary material with gun powder priming d<2>. The tail e is connected to an adapter f secured by screws to the tube b and is blown off on impact when a fuze pin i strikes a cap g and ignites the tail-blowing charge h. Each incendiary unit comprises a cup c of magnesium alloy with core c<1> having a slotted end c<2> and a closing cap with flash holes n. The flash ignites a main delay fuze o and priming for the incendiary material c<3> such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Thermit." An ejection delay fuze m ignites the propelling charge l for the first unit the flash from which passes to the delay fuzes of the next unit and so on until all the units have been ejected and ignited. The last propelling charge ignites the priming d<2> of the nose filling d<1> which sets fire to the body a and material bland brings the steel nose to a white heat.
