Abstract

A water-dispersible vitamin preparation for food, e.g., for addition to whole or skim milk, and for pharmaceutical use, is made by dissolving in honey one or more of the watersoluble vitamins, exemplified by concentrates of the vitamin B complex from rice bran or whey, thiamin hydrochloride, riboflavin, nicotinic acid amide, pantothenic acid, calcium pantothenate, biotin, pyridoxine and vitamin C, and emulsifying into the honey one or more of the fat-soluble vitamins, A, D, E and K exemplified by vitamin A or D concentrates prepared from fish oils by saponification and high vacuum distillation, carotene concentrates and vitamin D concentrates obtained by activating cholesterol, ergosterol or 7-dehydrocholesterol. The emulsification may be assisted by the use of edible gelatinous or mucilaginous substances, e.g., the edible grades of methyl and ethyl cellulose, gum acacia, gum tragacanth, gum senegal, agar, sugar beet gum, pectin and gelatine, and by preliminarily dissolving the fat-soluble vitamin in ethyl alcohol. The pH of preparations not already pH4 or less is preferably reduced by addition of a non-toxic organic acid, e.g., lactic, tartaric or citric acid.
