Abstract

<PICT:0590638/III/1> <PICT:0590638/III/2> Oil is extracted from animal material, especially whale, herring or other fish, by heating the material with live steam in a rotating perforated drum whose inside wall has corrugations which are parallel to the axis of the drum and which have a depth at least equal to 1/12 of the outer diameter of the drum. The live steam enters through a stationary or rotary perforated steam supply tube arranged inside the drum along the wall thereof but at some distance therefrom, so that a plane through the longitudinal axis of the tube and the axis of the drum lies at an angle of about 45 degrees to the horizontal. Upon rotation of the drum, the animal material is lifted to a certain height by means of the corrugations and then falls down upon the steam supply tube. Obliquely arranged plates or wings may be attached to the surface of the steam supply tube so that upon rotation of the tube a screw-thread action is created, thus producing a longitudinal movement of the animal material through the drum. The steam supply tube may be circular, star-shaped or fan-shaped in cross-section, may be arranged for continuous or intermittent rotation, and may be provided with an arrangement, preferably driven from the driving device of the drum, for applying a vibratory or shaking movement to the tube in order to prevent an accumulation of material thereon. More than one steam supply tube may be employed and perforated steam supply tubes may also be disposed outside the drum. The animal material may be cut up or minced before treatment and the drum may be arranged in a plate casing with oblique bottom planes for easy removal of the oil and water which separate from the animal material. One or more drums may be arranged in the casing, either one beside another or one above another or both. The drums may work in parallel or in series. In Fig. 4, a perforated rotating drum 1 is supplied with animal material through channel 8, the material after extraction of oil leaving through outlet 9. The drum is arranged in a casing 7 and any oil or water which separates is led away through outlet 10. Steam is supplied from inlet 17 both through internal pipe 3, having guide wings 4, and external pipe 2. The drum may have the cross-section shown in Fig. 1.
