Abstract

590,606. Safety cut-off valves. MAY, P. (Grayson Heat Control, Ltd.). Aug. 17, 1944, No. 15756. [Class 135] A safety cut-off device for gas burners comprises a control valve for the main burner, manually re-set means which operate in response to a flame at the pilot burner to govern the operation of the control valve, a stop valve' which in one position establishes flow of gas to both the main and pilot burners and in a second position allows gas to flow to the pilot burner only, and stop means on the stop valve which prevent actuation of the manually operated resetting means except when the stop valve is in the second position. The manually re-set means comprises an armature 138 attracted by an electromagnet 144 energized by a thermocouple 166a exposed to the pilot flame. The control valve is also governedthermostatically in accordance with the temperature of water heated by the main burner. The construction described is similar to that described in Specification 590,605 but in this case the skirt of the stop cock 23 has a slot 180 which is only in alignment with the stem 174 of the re-setting button 170 when the cock is in the second or " pilot " position and thus it is only in this position that the control valve 190 can be re-set. The rigid arm carried by the stem 174 and the sleeve it operates are dispensed with since the main gas supply is cut off by the cock 23 during the re-setting operation.
