Abstract

590,446. Friction clutch plates. BORG & BECK CO., Ltd., and CRUTCHLEY, F. April 20, 1945, No. 10001. [Class 80 (ii)] Between a clutch driven plate and its supporting hub is an intermediate member which is radially and circumferentially movable relative to one of the parts and is capable of limited tilting movement relative to the other part. The radial flange 11 of a hub 10 has equi-angularly spaced axial holes 27, alternate holes 23 housing balls 24 whose diameter is greater than the flange thickness. A pair of annular rings 25 surround the hub on each side of the flange and are restrained against radial and circumferential movement by inturned ribs 26 closely fitting in the intermediate holes 27. The rings 25 are located axially by the dished discs 13, 14, secured together by the shouldered rivets 18, shims 30 being interposed between the annular rings and the discs. Helical springs 21 mounted in openings 20 and retained by wires 22 as described in Specification 369,810 restrain any relative angular movement between the hub flange and the discs, a positive drive after a predetermined spring deflection being provided by the shouldered rivets 18 in the notches 19 in the hub flange. The friction material is riveted to resilient plates 15 which are in turn riveted to the disc 13. The balls may be replaced by plungers with domed ends.
