[Class 18] Each end piece of a coffin or burial casket has its inner face bevelled or inclined where it meets the side piece so as to be at right angles thereto, and each side piece and the adjacent end piece are provided with a continuous tongue and groove, or groove and tongue, respectively of an undercut dovetail form, by which they may be interconnected at such inclined face. The tongue 4 may be on the side piece 3 and the groove 5 on the end piece; and one side face of the groove may be perpendicular to the inner face of the end or to the inclined part 2 thereof. The coffin side may itself extend into a groove 6, Fig. 4, in the end piece at the base of which groove is formed the undercut groove 5. Alternatively, the undercut groove may be formed in the end edge of the coffin side, Fig. 5, the tongue 7 growing from the base of the groove 6, which receives the end of the side piece. Thetongue may be separately formed, Fig. 6, and take into a slight recess in the piece to which it is attached (e.g., by screws 8), and it may be of wood, metal, moulded plastic, treated felt or the like; or a double undercut connecting piece 9, Fig. 7, may be provided to enter grooves in the end piece and side piece. The attachable tongue may be slightly tapered from end to end and the groove correspondingly shaped. The side and end pieces may be built up from separate pieces of timber and may be veneered. Dowels, screws or other additional securing means may be used at the corner joints. When plastic mouldings are used for the coffin parts, reinforcement may be intermoulded in the tongues. Wooden tongues may be strengthened by screws or other inserts. Caps with undercut grooves may be slid on the tongues to protect them during transport.
