589,533. Glass manufacture. HADDAN, R. (Corning Glass Works). March 26, 1945, No. 7582. [Class 56] An ultra-violet transmitting glass, having a transmission in 1 mm. thickness of at least 15 per cent for light of wavelength 185 millimicrons, is made from a batch comprising 50-70 per cent silica, 4-10 per cent alumina, 1-5 per cent alkali metal oxide and 20-40 per cent boric oxide, in which the molecular ratio of boric oxide to alkali metal oxide is greater than 2 to 1 and the percentage of alumina is not less than the percentage of alkali metal oxide. The glass is substantially free from colouring oxides and oxides of zinc and antimony and may contain 0.1-1 per cent calcium oxide.
