Abstract

Grain is fumigated by treatment within an enclosed space with an aerosol containing a compound of the type R1 (R2).CH-CX3, R1 being a radical containing at least 3 carbon atoms, R2 being a radical containing at least 5 carbon atoms and X being chlorine or bromine (see also Group VI). Specifications 547,871 and 566,386, [both in Group VI], are referred to.ALSO:Articles made wholly or partly of permeable material are fumigated by treatment within an enclosed space with an aerosol containing a compound of the type R1(R2) CH-CX3, R1 being a radical containing at least three carbon atoms, R2 a radical containing at least five carbon atoms and X being chlorine or bromine. Suitable compounds include a ,a -diphenyl-b b b -trichloroethane, a ,a -bis(p-toluyl)-b b b trichloroethane, and a ,a -bis-(p-chlorophenyl)-b b b trichloroethane. The articles which may be treated include furniture, clothing and grain. The aerosol may be produced by heating the compound on a tray or other open container, by spraying a solution of the compound in a volatile solvent on to a heated tray, by spraying a solution of the compound in a liquefied normally gaseous solvent into the atmosphere, or by igniting a combustible mixture of the compound with a solid combustible carrier. Suitable combustible carriers include flour, wood meal, pitch, bitumen, sulphur, unsized paper, cork, cardboard, sawdust &c. The combustibility may be increased by impregnating the carrier with potassium nitrate, potassium chlorate or sugar. Non-combustible fillers such as powdered gypsum, slate dust, stone dust or binding agents such as glue or gum may also be included. The combustible composition may be shaped as a candle, which can be ignited by a wick impregnated with potassium nitrate. The composition may be packed in a cylindrical casing of tinned iron, copper asbestos or cartridge paper impregnated with chlorinated napthalene. Specifications 547,871 and 566,386 are referred to.
