Abstract

Concrete structures such as roads and dams are prepared from stones of two different sizes, the smaller stones being approximately 1/12-1/18 of the linear dimensions of the larger ones, by forming layers of the larger stones with intervening gaps which are filled with the smaller stones, and pouring grout into the gaps either before or after the insertion of the smaller stones. The gaps between the large stones are approximately equal to a sixth of the average dimension of the large stones. When the small stones are inserted before application of the grout, they are at least 3/4 inch in size for depths up to 9 inches and at least 1 inch in size for depths of over 99 inches; if the grout is applied first in which case sufficient is employed to half fill the gaps, the smaller stones may be of not less than 1/2 inch grade.
