Abstract
588,625. Heating air; hot-water boilers. HAGLEY, J. A. Nov. 23, 1944, No. 23336. [Classes 64 (i) and 64 (iii)] In a domestic heating and ventilating system comprising a water boiler 1, a heat exchanger for using the combustion products from the boiler to heat a stream of air to be supplied to rooms, a flue 12 by-passing the heat exchanger and control means, e.g., dampers 14, to direct the combustion products to the heat exchanger or to the flue 12 as desired, the heat exchanger comprises a flue space 11 disposed alongside the by-pass flue 12 and an air space 25 substantially surrounding the flue space. In the form shown in Fig. 1, the flue 12 is surrounded by the annular flue space 11 and by the annular passage 25 for air supplied by a fan 23, the heated air passing to delivery ducts 26.. The boiler is heated by an oil or gas burner 5, and a second burner 22 is provided in the flue space 11. Air under pressure for combustion may be supplied from the fan to the boiler. The pivots for air dampers 14 are interconnected by toothed sectors. Thermostats to control the burners and dampers may be provided. In a modification, the two flues 11, 12 are rectangular and are arranged side by side and the air passage surrounds the flue 11 on three sides. In a third form, Fig. 8, the flues and air passage are mounted on a boiler heated by solid fuel. The combustion space, which is rectangular in plan and is surrounded on three sides by the water space, is divided into two parts by three plates 30, one at each side and one at the rear, which are connected at their bottom edges to the sides and rear of the boiler and are inclined inwardly and upwardly. Sliding dampers 33 control the flow of combustion gases to the space between the plates 30 and the boiler walls, and the damper 9a controls their flow to the flues. Air for combustion may be supplied below the grate from the fan through the pipe 35.
