Abstract

588,480. Drilling-machines. LUCAS, Ltd., J., and SWIFT, W. Feb. 21, 1945, No. 4380. [Class 83 (iii)] The feed of the tool in a drilling &c. machine is arranged to be arrested axially and moved radially to perform such an operation as cutting a circular groove in a bore, independently of the motion of the headstock. The hollow driving- spindle c contains a tool:spindle e, the exterior of the tool receiving end f being eccentric and carried in an eccentrically bored housing g. The housing is secured to the driving-spindle and connects the drive to the tool-spindle by radial keys h engaging grooves in the toolspindle so formed that relative axial movement of the spindles causes the tool-spindle to move eccentrically to the driving-spindle. A sleeve i is slidably mounted over the driving-spindle and connects with a peripheral groove in the tool-spindle by locating-screws k extending through slots in the driving-spindle, and is moved against spring pressure at n by bellcrank lever r riding over a ramp s on the bed of the machine. Applied to a multi-spindle machine, a number of operations may be performed on a work-piece simultaneously.
