Abstract
588,061. Strain gauges. VICKERSARMSTRONGS, Ltd., and NASH, A. R. B. Jan. 26, 1945, No. 2126. [Class 106 (ii)] An electrical strain gauge comprises two relatively movable pads 11, 12, a lever 13 pivotally. connected to one pad and also attached to the other pad such that relative movement between the pads operates to deflect the lever, a resistance element 16 over which the free end of the lever 13 is adapted to slide and which constitutes the variable resistance of a Wheatstone Bridge circuit, and an instrument such as a galvanometer for measuring the current in the circuit. The pads 11, 12 are mounted on a metal plate 10, the pad 12 being slidable thereon, and the gauge is mounted on a test piece by sticking the pads thereto. The lever 13 is carried by a spring hinge 14 fixed to the plate 10 near the pad 12, and a spring strip 15 connects the pad 12 and the lever. The element 16 consists of a length of nickel-chrome wire of high resistance supported upon a fillet of lacquer, synthetic resin &c. Electric leads a, b, and c are taken from the plate 10 and ends of the wire 16 to the Wheatstone bridge circuit.
