Abstract
Organic compounds containing at least one ethenoid group are polymerized by a process which includes the step of dispersing the organic compound in an aqueous medium containing an ammonium, alkali, or alkaline earth metal salt of the reaction product of maleic acid or its anhydride with indene and/or coumarone as dispersion medium. Preferred salts are those of ammonia, potassium, calcium, sodium and magnesium. Specified organic compounds are methyl methacrylate, ethyl acrylate, vinyl acetate, styrene, acrylonitrile, vinyl chloride and vinylidene chloride. Solvents, plasticizers and catalysts such as the aliphatic or aromatic peroxides, or mixed peroxides or the persalts, e.g. ammonium persulphate may also be present. In examples the sodium salt of maleic acid-indene reaction products together with ammonium persulphate as catalyst is used to polymerize in aqueous media (1) vinyl acetate; (2) methyl methacrylate; (3) styrene, and (4) the corresponding salt of maleic acid-coumarone reaction product is substituted in (1). The dispersion media are prepared by heating together mixtures of maleic acid or anhydride with indene and coumarone or a mixture of these, with or without a diluent, in the presence of a peroxidic catalyst, and digesting the reaction mixture with aqueous alkali. p Preferred salts are those containing between 0.5 and 4 mols of maleic acid per mol. of indene or coumarone.
