Abstract

587,771. Lubricating systems. POWER JETS, Ltd., and FEILDEN, G. B. R. April 1, 1943, No. 5265. [Class 12 (iii)] In a multiple-delivery lubricating system having a continuous circulation of oil in' a main circuit offering substantial viscous resistance to flow, the branch lines have flowrestricting means offering proportional viscous resistance whereby the delivery; is independent of the viscosity of the oil. The flow-restricting means comprises a helical passage formed by a screw thread fitting a cylinder, the main flow passing through or around the restrictor so that its temperature controls that of the branch flow. As applied to a gas-turbine aero-engine, Fig. 1, the turbine 2 and impeller 1 have a common shaft with front and rear bearings 3, 4 and a gear-box 5 for auxiliary drives such as the oil gear pump 6. This pump receives oil from a tank 7 and delivers it by pipes 9, 9A through a filter 10 and check valve 11 with pressure gauge 9B to the bearings 3, 4 and tank 7. Tappings from pipe 9 may supply other parts such as the gear-box. A scavenge pump embodied in unit 6 may return the oil from sumps by pipes 12, 12A, 13 to the tank. Each restrictor, Fig. 3, comprises a cylindrical body 30 carrying a plug 31 with square threads and an outlet union 32. The plug has an inlet baffle 34, to create a turbulence in the main flow oil, and radial ports 35 leading past the screw thread to the outlet. The outlet may consist of drilled bores leading to a spout or nozzle from which the air is sprayed by a transverse external air jet from a nozzle supplied by air under pressure preferably tapped from the engine blower. In a modification, the outflow pipe ends at the gear-box at atmospheric pressure and the scavenge pump returns the oil to the tank. According to the Provisional Specification, the flow-restricting means may consist of a tubular wire gauze filter, one end being held and the other end rotated slightly to alter the bias of the gauge weave and so vary the size of the aperture.
