Abstract

587,768. Grinding aspherical lenses. COOKE, TROUGHTON, & SIMMS, Ltd., and TAYLOR, E. W. Jan. 17, 1945, No. 1425. [Class 60] In a machine for grinding, polishing or similarly treating a work-piece, such as a lens or mould member for plastic lenses, to produce an aspherical surface thereon, the work-piece is rotated about an axis whilst a grinding or like treating means is traversed across the surface to be treated, the traverse movements being determined by the path traced by a tracing element moving over the surface of an aspherical three - dimensional matrix, the adjustment of the aspherical matrix and the restraint of movement imposed on the tracing element being such that the desired aspherical surface is generated by the traverse of the grinding or treating means. The matrix may be a conical body. The work 10 is mounted in a chuck 9 on a spindle 6, carrying a pulley 7A and mounted in a headstock 5, adjustable by lead screw 7. The grinding wheel or lap 11, rotated by a pulley 38, is carried by a slide 30, mounted for transverse movement in a slide 29, mounted for longitudinal movement on the machine frame. The slide 30 also carries followers 42, 43 one of which, according to whether a convex or concave curve is required, is in contact with the surface of a cone 22 attached to a bracket 21 mounted on a tapered pin 20 projecting from a slide block 19, vertically adjustable on post 16 by means of slip gauges inserted between prepared faces 44, 45; the cone is adjustable about the pin 20 by worm and worm-wheel 23, 24 operated by knob 26. The post 16 is carried by a slide 13, movable on a slide 13A which is mounted on part 12 of the machine frame by a pivot 14. By means of a microscope built into the spindle 6 and sighting marks let into the axis of the grinding-wheel, accurate correlation of the work and tool can be obtained.
