Abstract
Isopropenyl acetate is copolymerized with vinyl chloride by mass, solvent or emulsion processes. Catalysts such as benzoyl, lauryl, acetyl and hydrogen peroxides, alkali metal perborates or persulphates or ammonium persulphate may be present. Plasticisers such as benzyl phthalate, benzyl succinate, butoxyethyl tetrahydrofuroate, cyclohexyl acetate, diethylene glycol monobutyl ether, diethylene glycol dibutyrate, ethoxyethyl adipate or sebacate, ethylene glycol monobenzyl ether, monoxyethyl phthalate, tetrahydrofurfuryl adipate, triacetin, tripropionin, triamyl phosphate, tributyl phosphate, triethylene glycol diacetate, triphenyl phosphate, camphor, tribromo phenol and di-n-octyl phthalate may be added before or after polymerization. Gum arabic may be used as an emulsifier. Other synthetic resins, natural resins, non-drying, drying or semi-drying oils, waxes, cellulose acetate, pigments, fillers and dyes may be incorporated with the copolymers. The partial copolymer can be used to impregnate paper or textiles and as a lens cement and further polymerized. The products may be made into films or extruded into filaments. The resins may be treated with a softening agent and then kneaded, rolled, compressed or drawn. The Provisional Specification refers to isopropenyl carboxylic esters generally.
