Abstract

587,421. Automatic shutters for heat-exchangers. CARTER, B. C. Oct. 30, 1944, No. 21201. [Classes 64 (ii) and 64 (iii)] An automatic shutter for controlling the air flow through an aero-engine oil cooler or like heat-exchanger comprises a frame 1 or a plurality of contiguous frames forming a support or supports for a number of bi-metallic elements 3 which are arranged in grid form and in such a manner that the gap or air passage between any two adjacent pairs of elements will vary with the temperature of the latter. Preferably each element consists of a V-shaped strip with bowed limbs which is formed by folding a brass/invar strip, e.g., 2.4 inches wide and 0.01 inches thick, about its longitudinal centre line, and it is strengthened by inwardly bending the free edges 3b thereof and is also reinforced at the apex 3a by an inner steel strip 3d. The elements are mounted transversely in the frame which is located on the downstream side of the cooler with the apices pointing upstream, by a plurality of longitudinal rods 4 which are secured to the top and bottom walls 1a, 1b of the frame and extend through holes 6 in said apices and/or by means of tongues which extend from both ends of the apices and engage slots in the side walls of the frame, the elements being so' designed and spaced that adjacent free edges contact to close the shutter at the lower temperature limit and themselves close to open the shutter fully at the upper limit. The elements may also be supported in slots 1d, 1f in the frame stiffening members 1c, 1e. A plurality of narrow parallel scores may be formed across the width of each limb of an element in order to avoid buckling of the latter, the scores extending the full 'thickness of one of the constituent metals thereof. The invention is also applicable to an annular type shutter, in which case the bi-metallic elements are arranged radially between inner and outer concentric circular frame walls.
