Abstract

587,286. Lubricating. HEYWOOD, R. B. Sept. 1, 1944, No. 16727. [Class 12 (iii)] A lubricating system for engines wherein at starting only a small portion of the main body of oil is used in the circulation but in which the main body of oil is gradually brought into circulation as the main body of oil is warmed up comprises a main oil reservoir and an auxiliary reservoir which receives the return flow from the engine and from which the oil can pass to the main reservoir by a narrow pipe of substantial length immersed in the main body of oil, such passing of oil however being restricted by the high viscosity until the main body of oil has been warmed up, and the auxiliary reservoir having an alternative discharge direct to the inlet of the circulating pump. In the arrangement shown a circulating pump 2 draws oil from a partitioned-off portion 3 of a reservoir 1 formed by the engine sump and such oil on returning discharges into an auxiliary reservoir 4 which has a long narrow tube 6 for the passage of this oil back to the main reservoir 1. At starting therefore, when the main body of oil is cold, viscosity will restrict the return of oil through such narrow tube 6 and the circulated and warmed oil will therefore rise in the auxiliary reservoir 4 and overflow direct to the partitioned-off portion 3 of the reservoir and so continue to be re-circulated. The warm oil in the tube 6 will however gradually warm the main body of oil and the reduction in viscosity will allow a greater flow through the tube 6 so that eventually the auxiliary reservoir 4 empties and the whole body of oil is then used in the circulation the oil passing from the main reservoir 1 to the partitioned-off portion 3 by a small opening 8.
