Abstract
587,137. Indicating faults ; power factor and resistance measurements. REYROLLE & CO., Ltd., A., and LYLE, A. G. Oct. 2, 1944, No. 18835. [Class 37] The condition of insulating material situated between a conductor and its metal sheath is ascertained by means of a power factor meter which measures the phase angle between the voltage in the conductor and the capacity current flowing between the conductor and its sheath. A conductor A is insulated from two sections B, B<1> of a metal sheath by condenser type bushings F, G. The two sections B, B<1> which are insulated from each other, are connected to the current coils of power factor meters H, the other ends of the current coils being connected to earth. The voltage coils of the power factor meters are energised by the low tension side J<1> of a transformer J having its high tension side J<2> connected to the conductor A. Any deterioration in the condition of the insulation produces an increased deflection of the power factor meter which is an indication of the deterioration of the insulation. Each power factor meter may also operate a relay and thus isolate a particular section of the conductor. This system can be used for any number of phases, and one power factor meter only is required for testing every section of the sheath, to which it may be connected by a manually operated or continuously driven selector switch.
