[Class 106 (ii)] An apparatus for measuring the loads on control rods and the like comprises an elastic ring or like member adapted to be connected in the control line so as to be subjected to the control loads, the member being fitted with electrical resistance strain gauges and having its deformation. limited by a stop constituted by two members which take up the load when it exceeds a p predetermined value. To measure the loads on an elevator control rod of an aircraft ,in flight, the ring 1 is of steel and has secured to it, at opposite ends of a diameter, an externally threaded tubular casing 2, which fits inside the end of the tubular control rod 5, to which it is secured by pins 6, and a steel plug 3 disposed within the casing 2 and provided with a forked end 4 for attachment to the rocking lever pivoted to the fuselage of the aircraft. A key 7 carried by the plug extends through slots in the tubular casing, its movement being limited by nuts 9 and 10 so that, when a predetermined load is applied, further deformation of the ring is prevented and the load is taken up by the stop members. Balls 11 are carried in a cage (not shown) between the plug and casing. Wire-wound electrical resistance strain gauges 12, 13, 14, 15 are cemented to the ring at opposite ends of a diameter normal to the loading diameter, two on the inside and two on the outside of the ring, and are connected to form the four arms of a Wheatstone net as shown in Fig. 2, this circuit providing automatic temperature compensation. The micro-ammeter of this circuit is calibrated by applying known loads to the control rod when the aircraft is on the ground. The, deformation of the ring is not of sufficient magnitude to give rise to slackness in the controls.
