Abstract
Electrical insulating material is produced by a modification of the process of the parent Specification in which a mixture is compounded of 10-70 per cent by weight of a copolymer of isobutylene and styrene, 1-50 per cent of polyisobutylene and 1-50 per cent of polystyrene. Preferably, the copolymer comprises from 10-90 per cent of isobutylene and from 90-10 per cent of styrene. Fillers may be incorporated in the composition; specified are talc, whiting, barytes, lithopone, zinc oxide, lead sulphate and chromate, carbon black, wood flour and cotton linters. Rubber or synthetic rubber, e.g. polybutadiene, styreneacrylonitrile copolymers, isobutylene-diolefine copolymers, polychloroprenes, polysulphide resins and factice, may also be incorporated in the composition, if desired together with a vulcanizing agent and the mixture vulcanized. Composite articles having different properties, e.g. elasticity, in different portions of the same structure may be obtained by using compositions with differing proportions of the three polymeric materials and by the use of copolymers having differing proportions of isobutylene and styrene.
