Abstract

586,276. Dynamo-electric machines. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., and FRIEDLANDER, E. Jan. 4, 1943, No. 137. [Class 35] Converting electric energy into motion of fluids by the action of magnetic field.- Conducting liquid such as mercury forming an ignition jet in a mercury arc converter flows along a channel in the field of a polyphase magnet, the channel containing one or more conductors, additional to the liquid, forming with a path or paths through the liquid closed loops. In the form shown, the tube 8 contains two pairs of axially extending conductors 21, 22 and 23, 24, each of semicircular section with insulation 26 between. These conductors are twisted so that 21 and 24 are outermost opposite members 16, 18 of a field-producing member carrying three-phase energized coils (not shown) and 22, 23 are outermost (Fig. 6c) near the centre of the tube opposite the central core member 17. Central saw cuts 9 separate both conductors 21 and 24 into two parts and links 12, 13 connect each half of 21 to the adjacent half of 24 at the end of the tube, thus providing two loops each consisting of half 21, link 12 or 13, half 24 and the liquid between the two projections 27 on the free ends of the halves of 21 and 24 near the tube centre. In addition, a separate loop is formed by the whole of conductors 22, 23 with the liquid paths between their ends, i.e. between projections 19 and between projections 20.
