[Class 40 (v)] In systems for obstacle detection by radio pulses or by the frequency sweep method using a wave modulated by a signal wave which is repetitive in character, a favourable signal-tonoise ratio is obtained by feeding to a differential detector, the signal wave and a suitable comparison wave, thus eliminating random noise elements. Fig. 1A shows a receiver for use with the radio pulse system in which the detected signal is applied to one input T of a differential detector D, the comparison wave being fed in at T1. The output is taken from a low-pass filter LP. The comparison wave-is supplied by a generator S at pulse periodicity and is shaped by passage through a phase shifter PS, limiter L, high-pass filter F and half-wave rectifier R. Fig. 1B shows the frequency sweep system in which energy direct from the transmitter T whose frequency is varied cyclically over a predetermined frequency range, is made to beat with a reflected wave in the receiver detector Det. 1, the result after further detection at Det. 2 comprising the principal wave for feeding at A to one input of a differential detector as in Fig. 1A. The comparison wave is derived from the modulator M of the transmitter and is shaped by a network N before being applied at B to the second input of the differential detector. In a modification, the comparison wave is derived from the signal wave by passing it through a network which delays it for an integral number of pulse periods. In a further modification, the comparison wave is derived from the main wave by modulating it from a constant frequency source, the modulated wave being mixed in proper phase with the signal wave in a second modulator.
