Abstract

In forming shaped articles by casting, acrylates and alpha - substituted derivatives thereof are polymerized or copolymerized with 30 per cent or less of other unsaturated compounds in bulk in the presence of an organic peroxy compound, sulphur dioxide and an acetal or ketal compound. Acrylates and derivatives specified are methyl, ethyl, phenyl and methallyl methacrylates, polyethylene glycol dimethacrylate, methyl acrylate, methyl alpha - chloracrylate and ethylene glycol diacrylate. Other monomers specified are styrene, vinyl acetate, methacrylic anhydride, methacrylic acid, acrylonitrile, diethyl maleate, vinyl chloride, methyl vinyl ketone, dimethyl itaconate, divinyl ether, acrolein, isoprene, vinyl esters, allyl and diallyl esters, and vinyl ketones. Peroxy compounds specified are benzoyl, acetyl, benzoyl acetyl, diethyl and succinyl peroxides and peracetic acid. Acetals specified are 1 : 3-dioxolane, 2-methyl-, 2-vinyl-, and 2-phenyl-1 : 3-dioxolanes and the ketal obtained from ethylene glycol and diethyl ketone. Preferably the catalyst mixture is added to the monomer and a syrup is formed by partially polymerising. The syrup is then poured ino the mould and the polymerization completed. Plasticizers such as dibutyl phthalate, dyes and fillers and phenyl iodide may be added to the monomer or the partially polymerized syrup.
