Abstract

A vinyl halide polymer or copolymer formed from at least 10 per cent by weight of vinyl halide is stabilized by adding 0.2 to 10 per cent by weight of a salt of thorium or zirconium. Specified resins are polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl bromide, polyvinyl iodide and copolymers of a vinyl halide with a vinylidene halide, or a maleate, or a chloromaleate, or a fumarate, or a chloro-fumarate, or an ester of another alpha, beta unsaturated polycarboxylic acid, or vinyl acetate, or other vinyl ester, or styrene, or an acrylate or a substituted acrylate. Specified fumarates are the dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diisobutyl, dihexyl, ditetrahydrofurfuryl and dibenzyl esters. In examples, thorium acetate is used to stabilize (a) vinyl chloridediethyl fumarate plasticised with dibutyl sebacate, (b) vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride, and (c) vinyl chloride-diethyl maleate.
