[Class 34 (ii)] A laundry &c. drying machine comprises an inperforate rotary horizontal cylinder A having opposed perforated lifters A<4>, A<6> extending longitudinally along its inner surface, the lifter or lifters A<4> communicating with a hot air inlet A<3> through a radial hot air supply duct D, disposed between parallel walls A<1>, A<2> at one end of the cylinder, and the lifters A<6> communicating through similar ducts D' with the hollow trunnion B of the machine which leads to a suction fan E through ducting G. As shown, the air inlet A<3> extends axially from the cylinder wall A' and concentric with the trunnion B, which is mounted on the wall A<2>, the end of the inlet A' remote from the said wall A<1> opening to atmosphere through a heating battery F. The arrangement is such that rotation of the fan E by an electric motor C<1> will induce a current of air through the heater F, inlet A', duct D, lifter A<4> and across the drying cylinder to the lifters A', ducts D', trunnion B and ducting G, the fan exhausting direct to atmosphere; some of the exhaust may, however, be returned to the machine, with or without reheating, as desired. The motor C<1> also rotates the cylinder A through spur-gearing c<3>. The cylinder and its trunnion rotate on anti-friction rollers a, b mounted in a supporting frame C, and air seals d, b' are provided between these parts and the stationary heater F. A lint-collecting bag may be fitted in the ducting G. The invention is also applicable to machines with a drying cylinder supported on trunnions at each end, in which case drying air may be supplied to the cylinder through one trunnion and exhausted through the other.
