Abstract
584,372. Torpedoes. WISE, G. Nov. 15, 1943, No. 19026. Convention date, Jan. 4. [Classes 9 (i) and 9 (ii)] Relates to multiple torpedoes, in which a central torpedo carries auxiliary torpedoes, time-controlled releasing mechanism being provided whereby the auxiliary torpedoes may be detached whilst the assemblage is on its way to the target and then become self-propelled. According to the invention, the means for the independent propulsion of the auxiliary torpedoes remains inactive so long as all the torpedoes are connected together as a unit, and when put into operation disconnects the auxiliaries from the central torpedo. As seen from underneath in Fig. 2, the central torpedo 1, the main constructional features of which are of the usual type, has attached to it two tubes 5, each open at the forward end, and containing an auxiliary torpedo 6, Fig. 4. The usual war-head containing high explosive 9, and a percussion firing-pin 10 are provided in each auxiliary torpedo, which also contains a tube 11 filled with propulsive rocket powder 11'. A fuze 13 is connected to the rear end of the rocket charge and at the forward end of the fuze is a match-head 14 adjacent to a spring- controlled lever 15 carrying a friction igniter 16. Each lever 15 has an outwardly-turned end abutting against a plunger 19 extending into the casing of the main torpedo. The plunger is acted upon by a spring 41 held in compression by engagement of the end 39 of the plunger with a flange on a member 32, which is controlled by timing-mechanism 2. At a predetermined time during the run of the torpedo assemblage, the member 32, moved forward by screw-and-nut mechanism, releases the plungers 19, which thereupon actuate the levers 15, causing the fuze in each auxiliary torpedo to be ignited and to fire the propellant charges 11<1>. The auxiliary torpedoes are thus ejected from their tubes and travel towards the target along paths which may diverge from that of the main torpedo. Control apparatus 20 is provided in each auxiliary torpedo to steer it by means of vertical rudders 26 and horizontal rudders (not shown). The rudder posts are connected through collars 23, 30 on the tube 11 to the apparatus 20.
