Abstract
583,905. Heating metals by passage of current. OMES, Ltd., and MORA, G. May 5, 1944, No. 8577. [Class 39 (iii)] In heating wire, steel bars and the like in long lengths by pass-' age of current through them, the workpiece 19 forming part of the secondary circuit of a transformer, several transformers 22a, 22b are employed with their secondaries 12a, 12b connected together in series and to terminal blocks 13a, 13b in alignment with and parallel to the workpiece, an electrode 15 on each outermost terminal block engaging the workpiece. The transformers may be moved together or apart and the two innermost terminal blocks may be connected by a flexible connection 21 or they may be separately connected to the workpiece. The transformer secondaries comprise single turns of laminated copper leaves connected to grooved terminal blocks 13a in which slide the electrodes 15 with jaws closed on the workpiece by hydraulic rams. The terminal blocks are close to the workpiece to reduce losses due to magnetic leakage. The workpiece may be supported intermediately by insulated supports. According to the Provisional Specification, a single transformer may be used and may beat two long parallel rods, one pair of adjacent ends being connected to the secondary, the rods being connected by a conductor at the other ends so that current passes through the rods in series.
