Abstract
583,479. Cargo-carrying aircraft. BUDD MANUFACTURING CO., E. G. Oct. 25, 1943, No. 17549. Convention date, July 18,1942. [Class 4] A cargo-carrying'aircraft is provided with an opening 20 in the floor of the fuselage to the rear of the cargo space, the opening being normally closed by a hinged door 21 which can be lowered to the ground to serve as a ramp for loading and unloading the cargo, the door 21 being hinged at the junction of the fuselage floor and the bottom of the upwardly extending tail of the machine, the length of the opening 20 being such that the height of its rear edge above the ground is substantially equal to the height of the-cargo space. The door may be raised and lowered by means of screwed shafts 231 driven through worm gearing by an electric motor, and toggle struts 23 may also be provided to ensure that when the door is in the fully-lowered position the machine is braced against any tendency to overturn. Winches 27, 29 and cables 27<1> 29<1> may be provided for handling the cargo.' The cargo space is provided with bulkheads 51, Fig. 6, to which the wing spars 43 are attached. The door 21 may be utilised as a gun platform by partially 'lowering it from the closed position, the gaps between the sides of the door and the opening being closed by means of canvas or other flexible sheets. A vertical bulkhead 17 divides the nose portion of the fuselage from the cargo space, the nose portion being divided into upper and lower compartments by a floor 33, access to the upper or pilot's compartment being afforded by a staircase. A doorway may be provided in the bulkhead 17 to provide access from the nose to the cargo space.
