583,202. Drilling glass. ABBEY A. (American Optical Co.). Aug. 3, 1944, No. 14865. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIII] Work-holders; sockets.- A device for supporting a lens &c. throughout the various operations to which it is subjected, for example, grinding and polishing, edging, bevelling, cutting and drilling, is formed of non- metallic material, for example, a plastic substance and is discarded after the various operations have been completed. The support 8 may comprise a loaded or unloaded resinous material, for example, methyl methacrylat polystyrene, cellulose acetate or other esters of cellulose, the loading material being flour, chalk, mica, &c., or fibrous materials such as asbestos, cotton linters, wood fibres, paper, cloth, &c. and the lens &c. 7 is secured to the support by pitch &c. or the support itself may act as the adherent to hold the lens, the support then comprising natural or processed resin, coal tar, pitch, &c. The support 8 has in its rear face a screw-threaded recess 36 to receive the screwed end 37 of a metal &c. holder 10 having thorein a tapered opening 38 to receive the end 39 of a supporting stud 39, the studs in the various machines being of standard size ; the lens is oriented correctly so that its axes occupy the correct position relatively to the various tools used, by means of a slot 41 in the holder 10, which is engaged by locating pins 40 in the studs 39. The holder 10 may fit :in a recess in the holder 8, being secured therein by pitch &c. The face of the device may be provided with a datum line.
