Abstract

Acetylene is produced by the dissociation of hydro-carbons under the action of a silent discharge. The apparatus (see Group XL) is designed to treat the gas at atmospheric or higher pressures without allowing the silent discharge to develop into an arc so as to maintain the temperature at a level that will produce dissociations and reactions giving rise to undesired products.
