Abstract

582,113. Stairs. SANKEY & SONS, Ltd., J., and HANCOX, F. A. Aug. 19, 1944, No. 15869. [Class 20 (iv)] A sheet-metal staircase comprises separately formed sheet-metal steps 12 each having an upwardly sloped flange 14 at the rear of the tread overlying a downwardly sloped flange 13 at the bottom of the next riser, the flanges having slots 29 through which are passed bolts received in wedge-shaped nuts positioned in a dove-tailed groove 24 forming part of each sheet-metal stringer. Each stringer comprises an inclined strip 10 bent as shown and an outer strip 20 also bent as shown to form inclined ledges 16, 23 on which the flanges 13, 14 rest. Panelling 39 is held between positions 19, 21 of the stringer at one side of the staircase and balustrade posts 40 and a handrail 42 are provided. The bottom step 32 is shaped as shown in Fig. 3 with an upwardly sloping flange 14a and bolt holes 29a and is provided with a short post 33 over which a hollow sheet-metal newel post may be slid, the newel post having vertical flanges between which the lower vertical edge of the balustrade panelling is received.
