Abstract
581,721. Welding. GORDON, S. H., . SINCLAIR, J. M., MILLWOOD, W. H., and YOUNG, W. F. Dec. 30, 1940, No. 18226. [Class 83 (iv)] In making hollow articles of cylindrical, spherical or other curved form by electrically welding two parts edge to edge, the parts are secured in the fixed and movable electrodes by a solder of low melting-point. The soldered joints take a considerable proportion of the forging pressure during welding and prevent buckling of the work. In view of the heat produced by the welding current, very little additional heat is required to melt the solder after welding in order to remove the work from the electrodes. The electrodes 14 are provided with light detachable loaders 6, concave on one side to fit the work parts 2 and convex on the other side to fit the concavity in the electrode so that parts may be welded while other parts are being soldered to other loaders. The soldered areas preferably extend inwards through a little less than 45 degrees as indicated at 18. The loaders are provided with dowels 16 fitting in recesses in the electrodes and have rebated flanges 10 by which they are clamped to the electrodes by the hooked ends of pivoted bolts 12. In addition to welding together two parts of the same shape as in welding compressed-air bottles, a hemispherical, conical or ogival part may be welded to another part which may be otherwise secured in its electrode.
