[Class 73] A machine for labelling bottles and other containers while in an upright position on a continuously-moving conveyer, having label-picking, pasting and applying instrumentalities which move in company with the bottle during the application of the label, is provided with a rotary turret 4 which has four pairs of labelholding fingers and moves with the bottle. A frame 1 fixed beside the conveyer 19 for the bottles 20 has cantilever guides 2, 2<1> along which a slide 3 is reciprocated by a cam 9. The turret 4 is mounted on the slide and is rotated through one-quarter of a revolution, by a fixed rack and a pinion and free wheel device, each time the slide moves to the left. The slide also carries a paste pan and roller 15, a label magazine 14, scissors-like label-applying members 12, and a smoothing band 13. During the rotation of the turret, one pair of label-carrying fingers is pasted by the roll 15, a pair which has been previously pasted receives a label, a third pair is in an idle position where it may be printed or further pasted, and the fourth pair positions a pasted label in front of the members 12. When the slide returns to the right, i.e., in the direction of travel of the conveyer, a backing member 21 carried by the slide 3 is moved in to support the bottles, and the members 12 and 13 are moved in respectively to apply a label and to smooth a previously applied label. The various labelling instrumentalities are operated at the correct times by fluid pistons. French Specification 821,422 is referred to.
