Abstract

580,735. Aircraft gun turrets. BRISTOL AEROPLANE CO., Ltd., and FRISE, L. G. March 25, 1943, No. 4869. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to power-operated top gun turrets for aircraft of the kind comprising an upper protruding portion 12 carrying two guns 13 or groups of guns with space between sufficient to take the head and shoulders of the gunner, the lower portion of the turret within the fuselage 11 being of reduced width to accommodate the gunner's seat 29 and part of his body. According to the invention, means are provided for storing live ammunition belt boxes 28 below the seat and for feeding the belts upwardly through conduits 37 in front of the seat and then outwardly through guides 39 to the guns which are fed from the inner sides. As shown, the lower portion of the turret comprises a platform 25 supporting two belt boxes 28 side by side, the platform being supported from above by two front pillars 26 and a rear pillar at one side corner of the platform. The seat adjustable by ratchet gear 35 is hinged to a stay 30 extending from a bracket 131 passing between the belt boxes. The empty cartridge cases and belt links are evacuated through shoots 40 to collapsable containers 41. The cradle 16 supporting the guns is trunnioned at 19 in brackets upstanding from the trainable ring 20 and this cradle comprises arms 16b cross-connected by a tubular arc-shaped member 21 extending to the front of the turret and supporting the sight 51. The electric motors 47, 43 for elevating and training and a motor generator set 42 are of the kind described in Specification 578,118 and are arranged in front of the turret beneath the tube 21 together with the control handle 52 and the cut-out gear 56 for interrupting the fire of the guns under danger conditions.
