Abstract
<PICT:0580407/III/1> <PICT:0580407/III/2> A polymerization reactor comprises a tube 4 containing a circulating device 14 and return tubes 5 connected by headers to form a closed circuit, which is surrounded by a refrigerating jacket 1. The circuit has an outlet 31 connected to a receiving vessel at a higher level so that the reactor is maintained full. The circulating device may be a propeller or a centrifugal device. Polymerizable material and catalyst are separately introduced into the turbulence zone of the circulating device by pipes 16, 17. The Specification describes the use of the reactor for the low-temperature polymerization of olefinic materials. These are delivered to the reactor, optionally in admixture with a diluent, through line 16 at a temperature of -103 DEG C., liquid ethylene being used as refrigerant. The propeller is then started and a Friedel-Crafts catalyst as vapour or in solution is admitted through line 17. The polymer is formed as a fine-grained slurry in the diluent which overflows through exit 31 to a recovery tank (not shown) containing warm water, from which the polymer is subsequently separated.
