Abstract
<PICT:0580338/III/1> Crude wool grease is refined by emulsifying the grease by agitating and heating it with water and soap to a temperature above its melting point followed by addition to the emulsion of a relatively small amount of a water-soluble sulphonated fatty oil whereupon the soap, dirt &c. are carried down by the water solution to form a lower layer and the grease to form a supernatant layer which are then separated. Sufficient soap may be present in the crude grease to effect the emulsification without its addition. Any type of wool grease may be treated such as hydrous crude, dry crude, or acid cracked wool grease, or "Yorkshire grease." The emulsion may be preliminarily treated with an alkali, preferably an alkali silicate, to remove free fatty acid, and also with a hydrogen peroxide bleaching agent such as H2O2 or a per-salt yielding H2O2 in aqueous solution, e.g., sodium perborate or percarbonate. The sulphonated fatty oils specified comprise sulphonated castor oil, neatsfoot oil, rape seed oil, corn oil and soya bean oil. The separated grease is washed with hot water preferably in counter-current, followed, if desired, by dehydration such as by means of a centrifugal separator. The grease may then be super-refined by treating hot with bleaching earth or decolorizing carbon followed by filtration through a filter press, or either, or in addition, de-aerating to remove odours &c. by treatment in a chamber under vacuum assisted by the introduction of steam, air or inert gas. A number of washing towers may be used and a preferred type comprises a tower 53 equipped with a number of nesting screens 27 supported by a ring 28 welded to the tower. Heating coils 18 are provided. Water and grease admitted at 30A flow upwardly through the tower, the grease being broken into droplets by the screens; the grease collecting at the top is withdrawn by a skimmer 21 and the water overflows to the space between the screens and the tower to be withdrawn at the outlet 23. The free acids may be recovered from the crude grease by treating the heated aqueous layer, remaining after removal of the grease layer, with dilute sulphuric acid. The free fatty acids, "degras," rise to the top and may be skimmed off for further purification if desired.
