Abstract
1429773 Refining fats UNILEVER Ltd 4 April 1973 [6 April 1972] 15831/72 Heading C5C In the deodorizing of fats, the vapours from the deodorizer are cooled by injecting into them a spray of liquid so that the fatty matter in them is condensed, at least in part, and the condensate and injected liquid are then separated from the steam by centrifugal forces. As shown, a deodorizer 1 operates under high vacuum, and vapours are taken off to a separator 3, which removes entrained droplets. Steam from line 5 is injected into booster 4, and the vapours pass to 6, where liquid is injected from nozzles 7 to 11. The mixture of steam and condensed material enters a cyclone separator 12 tangentially. The steam outlet 15 extends downwards below the inlet to the cyclone, so that entrained material does not pass into it. The separated fatty matter and injected liquid collect in the bottom of the cyclone, and are drawn off at 14. Part of it may be recycled by pump 26 to nozzles 7-9 or it may go to fat trap 30, from which water may be recycled by pump 34 to nozzle 11 and the fatty matter taken off at 33. Fresh water may be introduced at 37. The cleaned steam is condensed in barometric condenser 17 and collected at 21. The liquid injected may be water, oil, glycerine, a fatty acid, a salt solution or the condensed fatty matter. Particularly suitable is an aqueous solution of an alkali, e.g. sodium carbonate. The oils treated in the examples are groundnut, coconut and sunflower oils.
