[Class 7 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII A power plant in which a gaseous working medium is compressed, heated from an external source and then expanded in a turbine is regulated by removing or supplying working medium to the plant in accordance with changes of load and to prevent hunting, when sudden changes of load occur, a fraction of the quantity of working medium which has to be supplied or removed for complete regulation is suddenly removed from or supplied to the high pressure side of the system, the remainder being supplied or removed over a longer period. In the plant shown the working medium is compressed in a compressor 1 heated at 2, 3 and expanded in a turbine 4. Connected to the high pressure side of the system at 6 are two valves 7, 8 which control the supply to the system from reservoir 10 and removal from the system to reservoir 9 of working medium 1. The valve 7 is operated by a centrifugal governor 11 and removes fluid from or supplies it to the system in the normal manner as the speed of the plant rises or falls. The valve 8 is connected by a dashpot 16, 18 to a device 14 which takes up a position corresponding to the load being taken from a generator driven by the plant. On a sudden change of load occurring the dashpot piston is driven down quickly and operates the valve. If only a small change of load occurs the valve is not operated since a leak hole in the piston enables the oil to flow through to the other side. Other means of operating the valve 8 dependent on acceleration or the change of torque in the shaft connecting the turbine to the generator are described. An alternative arrangement is shown in which the valve 8 is operated by the centrifugal governor through a dashpot which only operates when there is a sudden change of speed. In a modification the working medium removed from the high pressure side of the plant 11 by the valve 8 is returned to the low pressure side. The valve 8 may further be used as a safety valve for closing down the plant quickly if the speed or pressure of the plant exceeds a safe value.
