579,866. Detergents. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. March 3, 1944, No. 3985. Convention date, March 5, 1943. [Class 91] [Also in Group XXXVI] Mineral oil is removed from metal surfaces by electro-cleaning in an aqueous solution of a composition comprising aqueous sodium silicate having an SiO2/Na2O weight ratio from 1.9 to 2.4 and a non-ionic foaming agent. Suitable non- ionic foaming agents are saponine, soapbark, maleic anhydride-styrene interpolymer, the polyglycol ether known as "Igepal C," the hexitan partial fatty acid ester known as "NNO," the sorbitan mono-oleate-poly-oxyalkylene derivative known as " Tween 81," sorbitan-monolaurate, palmitate or oleate, and polyalkylene oxide derivatives. The process is particularly applicable to the removal of metal-fabricating lubricants following such processes as the cold reduction of steel. The metal-fabricating lubricant may comprise mineral oil, an agent for increasing film strength such as tricresyl phosphate, an agent for increasing spreading characteristics such as lauryl phosphate, an oil dispersible or oil-soluble sulphonated wetting agent such as sulphonated castor oil and a solvent for the additives such as tetrahydronaphthalene, toluene or a petroleum fraction.
