Abstract
579,411. Inductor-alternators. MANDL, A., and METROPOLITAN-VICKERS ELECTRICAL CO., Ltd. Feb. 22, 1940, No. 3371. [Class 35] In a polyphase homopolar alternator with semi-closed slots and with each coil of the output winding embracing only one tooth of the stator, the coils for the several phases being located in phase sequence on the teeth, the pitch of the stator teeth is (mnŒ1) 180/m electrical degrees where m is the number of phases and n any integer such that the stator tooth pitch is greater than half the rotor tooth pitch. The figure shows a three-phase machine having sixteen rotor teeth, of which five, 3-7 are shewn. Stator teeth 8, 10, 12, 14 carry coils of the three-phase winding 15-18 and are separated by unwound teeth 9, 11, 13. The teeth are provided with pole tips so as to form semi-closed slots and the tops of the unwound teeth are substantially longer than those of the wound teeth, so that the latter are substantially of the width of the rotor teeth. An arrangement comprising two such rotors and stators on the same axis and with one exciting winding, but offset so that the even harmonics cancel-out is described.
