Abstract

579,173. Dropping bombs. S WIATECKI, W. J. July 5, 1943, No. 10920. [Class 9 (ii)] [Also in Group XXIV] The invention is concerned with the " cascade " type of bomb-dropping mechanism, in which the force required to release the bomb is reduced by means of cascade elements each comprising two rods pivoted together with their pivot and ends nearly in line in the holding position, the rods being held in the holding position by a transversely-acting restraining hook, lever, &c. (see Specifications 369,397 and 553,910). According to the invention, in order to conserve space one rod of a cascade element is pivoted on a fixed element by a point of the said rod other than that at which it is pivoted to the other rod of the cascade element, and at least one other cascade element has a rod likewise pivoted at the same point on the fixed element. Four examples are described: (1) (Fig. 1). The rod 3 of the cascade element 2, 3 is pivoted at a fixed point E, to which is pivoted also the rod 5 of a cascade element 4, 5. To release the bomb W, the hook 8 is turned counterclockwise. (2) (Fig. 3, not shown). This is a modification of Fig. 1, a third cascade element having one of its rods pivoted at the fixed point E. (3) (Fig. 5). The pivot F which is common to the rods 4 and 5 is fixed to a fly-wheel 9 which, under the weight of the bomb, tends to move counterclockwise and is allowed to do so by turning a lever 8 clockwise. (4) (Fig. 7). The pivot F is not fixed to the fly-wheel 9, but the pivot H is so fixed, and to it is pivoted rods 6 and 7, rod 7 being pivoted at the fixed point E and rod 6 being pivoted to an extension of the rod 5. The bomb is held by a cascade system 10 ... 15, which may be applied also to the constructions of Figs. 1, 3 and 5.
